The Metaverse has the potential to impact every facet of the enterprise and consumer experience. But what will the knock-on effect be on our environment, and how can we strive to build a Metaverse for all? Can we shape the Metaverse to tackle some of the major concerns of our physical existence?

The blockchain has come under serious scrutiny for its environmental impact and the computing power for this and in experiencing a truly immersive Metaverse is set to be astronomical. Work has been done to reduce the carbon load of transactions on the blockchain, but if we want to achieve the immersive Metaverse, we have to build this consciously and tackle these challenges head-on.

The Metaverse could promise a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, from the substitution of physical for virtual goods, replacing travel to events with virtual meetups, reshaping work, education and more. Moreover, the use of VR and AR in manufacturing could reduce parts and emissions massively and help consumers engage in the physical world with an augmented layer, that reduces the need for physical resources. The blockchain can even be used positively to track emissions from major contributors and hold them accountable.

Beyond sustainability, the metaverse has the potential to connect us in new ways and think more inclusively and globally. As the tooling some together to empower end users to build and create, what exciting new avenues will we see for humanity, co-creating a more diverse, equitable and mindful environment? The future is in our hands, but time is of the essence!
