The mountain of hype, excitement, and fomo surrounding the future of the internet has finally, quietly ceased. Meta’s Mark Zuckerburg has quietly buried the Metaverse- turning his focus to Ai. The Virtual reality dream of Facebook’s CEO has cost the company over 30 Billion Dollars in losses. It has left Facebook/Meta hemorrhaging cash and cutting staff, laying of over 10,000 employees. The scandals and controversies woven throughout Facebooks history has likely contributed: from psychological targeting, to the largest social experiment in history, to knowingly harming users’ mental health, to traumatic working conditions, to political division and international turmoil, Facebook is no stranger to deception. Cambridge Analytica’s whistleblower may have been the first to really expose Facebook, but more whistleblowers have come forward in the aftermath. Zuckerburg had planning to be the man behind Web 3, a new Cryptocurrency leader, the pioneer behind NFT art museums, a whole virtual economy, AND your new home office- his stubbornness and insistence on Facebook- now Meta- building the metaverse has caused potentially irreparable damage to the company. The virtual reality headsets are still expensive and uncomfortable- the avatars have no legs- and the experiences are disjointed and sporadic. The Metaverse is a desolate place: it shows what billions still can’t do. Artifical intellgence, generative Ai, and OpenAi’s GPT have changed everything and leveled the playing field. With competition, Facebook will have to earn back the world’s trust if they ever hope to control our futures. No one is signing up to live in a dystopian virtual hellscape, not if they can help it. All very Black Mirror indeed.
