Qualcomm AR and VR technology is empowering its partner Epic Games to create the software needed for a free and open metaverse. In the third episode of “Exploring the Metaverse,” Qualcomm VP & GM of XR and Metaverse Hugo Swart is joined by Marc Petit, VP of the Unreal Engine Ecosystem at Epic Games, to discuss how Snapdragon technology and Epic Games’ software are contributing to greater interoperability in AR, VR, and the metaverse.

According to Marc Petit, thanks to advancements from tech leaders like Qualcomm in processing power, AI, cloud computing, and the connected intelligent edge, the next evolution of the internet will be interactive real-time 3D experiences known now as the metaverse.

While the internet today is free and accessible to everyone because of net neutrality laws in place in many countries, those laws may not necessarily be applicable to the metaverse. So Epic Games is developing tools that enable the creation of metaverse experiences that are open source and have interoperability with as many platforms as possible.

Epic Games leverages its decades of experience in pioneering real-time 3D visuals for video games like Fortnite to create tools like Unreal Engine 5 and MetaHuman that make the act of creating immersive 3D content more accessible to everyone. This open accessibility can help kickstart a creator economy for AR, VR, and metaverse content that could result in an entirely new industry.

Qualcomm supports Epic Games’ vision for an open metaverse by ensuring Snapdragon mobile, compute, and XR platforms maintain that same level of interoperability for using Epic Games’ across as many platforms as possible.
