I gave the Oculus, aka Meta Quest 2, a try this weekend. There were some good things: it’s really immersive and I felt transformed into a new environment, and the headset was pretty comfortable to wear; it was pretty easy to navigate and create an avatar; there were some free games so it was easy to jump in; and you can have up to 4 accounts on a single headset and apps can be shared (or not). The not-so-good things: the first few minutes are pretty destabilizing (nausea, feeling tipsy) though it did go away; setting up the meta account is cumbersome to do and you need a phone as well as the headset (it’s annoying!); you generally do NOT have legs as there are no leg sensors; the left controller failed which was a bad experience. How quickly this will be improved might depend on how much more Meta loses on their metaverse division…$14B and counting. Overall, it was cool but it’s not replacing any of my real activities any time soon!
