Confused about what the metaverse is? Here’s a quick primer thanks to TIME magazine:

Think of it as a parallel virtual plane of existence, spanning all digital tech. It’ll be a persistent and “living” virtual world that’s not a window into our life, like Instagram; nor a place where we communicate, like Gmail; but one in which we also exist in 3D…

VR and AR devices may become a preferred way to access the metaverse, but they are not it.

Consider that smartphones are not the same thing as the mobile internet, and that Facebook and Google are part of the internet. Similarly, you need to think of the metaverse as singular, just as we say “the internet” not “an internet.”

It’s not an overhaul to the Internet, or something that’ll replace all mobile models, devices, or software. It’ll produce new technologies and behaviours.

There are still many hurdles to overcome before the metaverse is fully realised. For instance there’ll need to be many new devices to fully embrace it—not just VR goggles, but things like holographic displays and ultra-sonic force-field generators.
